Congrats on Graduating! Now what?
To the Class of 2016, congratulations graduating! I was just in your shoes a year ago. As you go to each graduation party and enjoy time with family and friends, it slowly begins to sink in. The rest of my life is starting. I’ll admit, it can be a bit scary and may hit you at different times. For me, it took some months for it to really sink in, and for others it was immediately.
When all the parties and congratulations are over, you have to ask yourself, “how will I add value to my community?”. After graduation you sprinted out of the gate young, ambitious, and ready to take the world. You have so many ideas in your head and you’re ready to put your all into it. You’re all over the place and wondering whether you should do it or not. Be like Nike and JUST DO IT! There is nothing holding you back but you! Ask yourself, How will I give back to my community? You learned all these great things in college and got a degree to prove it. Great! Now, how will you use those skills to help others? How will you make this world a better place?
After graduating, I recognized a need within my community, and that was the lack of financial literacy ([tweetthis]I recognized a need within my community, and that was the lack of financial literacy.[/tweetthis]). In order to address this need, I knew that I had to pass the CPA exams sooner than later. Why? Because outside of all the self-benefits that come with the license, I would be able to use my acquired knowledge to help others gain financial prowess. My goal is to raise the level of financial knowledge amongst those around me. I have seen too many people make poor financial decisions and I am doing something about it ([tweetthis]I have seen too many people make poor financial decisions and I am doing something about it.[/tweetthis]). I knew accounting and personal finance was my way to give back. What is yours? How will you add value to those around you? I challenge you!
There is always something you can do to help those around you. Your skills combined with your passion will lead you to your calling. You might want to join an organization that helps students achieve higher ACT scores. As a matter of fact, MAKE an organization that helps students achieve higher ACT scores. Or you might want to start a book club with your friends and get your family involved. You can even start an online business and give a portion of the profits to a charity you love. The possibilities are endless! There are so many things you can do to make a difference in the lives of those around you. The opportunity is yours, TAKE IT! You’re young, full of energy and have so much to offer, now show the world what you’ve got!
How does giving back relate to creating wealth?
Giving back is one of the ultimate gifts that everyone is capable of doing ([tweetthis]Giving back is one of the ultimate gifts that everyone is capable of doing.[/tweetthis]). Some of the most wealthiest individuals give back. Why? Because many of them have achieved success with the help of others and they now pay it forward. When I was writing scholarships, my mother and mentor were helping me every step of the way. When I was studying for the CPA exams, one of my closest friends studied along with me. The world is not meant to be traveled alone. As a matter of fact, this world CAN’T be traveled alone. Showing gratitude and humility towards others throughout your life is a grand gesture and is the gift that keeps on giving.
